ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
What is in a
Name?
The word "Monk" has traveled a long distance through history. It began in the stone cloisters of the Middle Ages, signifying a life of absolute discipline, silence, and withdrawal from the world. Yet, centuries later, we find the same name stamped on the leather soles of gentleman’s footwear and spinning on the turntables of smoky jazz clubs in New York.
This exhibition, "The Name of Monk", uses the polysemy of “Monk” to trace a trajectory from asceticism, to utility, to liberalism—three modes through which human beings have regulated, shaped, and ultimately released the body, knowledge, sound, and identity.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
This website is a Multimedia Museum Meta Mirror (MMMM)—a digital companion designed to guide you through a curated collection of physical artifacts.
How to Visit: Unlike a traditional museum where you might stroll randomly, this digital experience allows you to choose your own path. We have organized the 16 exhibition items into two distinct Narratives.
Welcome to the evolution of the Monk.
